Living and working in times of uncertainty

As you might have guessed, this post is not about design, color palettes or fonts. 

COVID-19 has been around for a while now and it seems like the whole world is on pause.

I guess at this point you’re dealing with the concerns (or fears) that a pandemic can cause, social isolation, home office, home school and the list goes on. And we have all these messages telling us what we should do in order to better navigate the quarantine: workout, meditation, online courses, tidying up and all that jazz… Hey, I totally support all of those activities (well… actually, I must confess I am not a big fan of tidying up just for the fun of it, but you know what I mean). The thing is, everyone of us is different and things affect us in different ways. I know people  who are using this time to redecorate their houses, others who do nothing but work and some others who are living in some kind of a “permanent Sunday”. 

If you’re wondering what you should do, I’m afraid I’m not the one with the answer. What I think is that you don’t have to do everything you usually can’t do just because you have more time now. You need to find out what works for you. In my case, as days went by and the dust started to settle I realized I needed a new routine, some kind of a new normal. So I structured my day in a way that’s similar to my usual “pre-coronavirus life” but with some changes and that helped me to stay more focused. And during my spare time I do whatever I feel like doing on that specific day, for example watch a movie, read or draw.

I didn’t forget that you’re an entrepreneur, that you have a business and that you want it to prosper. So, what should you do? Should you keep on selling as if nothing happened? Should you pause your promotions because you don’t want your clients to think that you have no empathy? Again, I’ve seen different approaches. Entrepreneurs who are not selling at all and others that have discovered new niches. Some experts say that we should stop promoting our products or services and some others state that we should embrace the opportunity. 

I cannot give you any advice on whether to promote your business or not. What I think is that you might need to take the time to think about the purpose of your business and what your clients need at this specific moment. Maybe you’re not promoting your product or service because you think that what you sell isn’t something super necessary. But maybe your customers will keep on buying them, not because they need them but because they make them happy. Or, on the contrary, maybe your customers are changing the way they spend their money so you’re gonna have to figure out a new way to be present.

Whatever you choose, stay true to your brand promise and values. Do your best in order to create an excellent customer experience. If your clients feel that you care about them, when all this craziness ends, they will stay faithful and they will keep on choosing your brand.
